SINECURE OFFICE OF STATE IN THE UK
Lord privy seal; Shadow Lord Privy Seal; The Lord Privy Seal; Keeper of the Privy Seal (United Kingdom)
The Lord Privy Seal (or, more formally, the Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal) is the fifth of the Great Officers of State in the United Kingdom, ranking beneath the Lord President of the Council and above the Lord Great Chamberlain. Originally, its holder was responsible for the monarch's personal (privy) seal (as opposed to the Great Seal of the Realm, which is in the care of the Lord Chancellor) until the use of such a seal became obsolete.
Examples of use of privy seal
1. From 1'60–63, he was Lord Privy Seal with Foreign Office responsibilities and as such handled the Common Market negotiations.
2. After Harold Macmillan secured a Tory hat–trick at the polls in October 1'5', Mr Heath was appointed Minister of Labour, and Lord Privy Seal in 1'60.
3. After a spell in foreign secretary Selwyn Lloyd‘s office (1'5'–60), he became private secretary to Edward Heath, then Lord Privy Seal, to support his work for entry to the EEC.
4. It was, he said, a shock to be told, casually, that we were going to do this.‘‘ He was backed by the Lord Privy Seal, Harry Crookshank, who demanded: Is this sensible for (the) U.K. alone in Europe to do this when we know we shall not wage (a) major war without the U.S. as (an) ally?‘‘ Churchill prevailed as other ministers argued that the H–bomb was simply a more efficient‘‘ version of Britain‘s existing atom bomb.
